Processing an application for a citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship)

Consult this section to find out how long it takes to process applications for a citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship).

Currently, the total processing time for a routine application for a citizenship certificate is ten months from the time the Case Processing Centre (CPC) in Sydney, Nova Scotia receives your application until the time you receive your certificate.

The process is divided into two (2) steps:

Step Processing Time
Step 1:

The Case Processing Centre (CPC) reviews your application to make sure you have included the appropriate fee payment. If so, you will receive an acknowledgment letter. If not, your application will be returned to you.

Once you receive your acknowledgement letter, you can access your case status by contacting the Call Centre.
This process takes approximately four (4) months from the time your application is received at the CPC.
Step 2:

The CPC completes a detailed review of your application.

Once your application has been reviewed by the CPC, you will be able to access your case status online using e-CAS or by contacting the Call Centre.

If your application is complete and approved, the CPC will send your citizenship certificate to you.
This process takes approximately six (6) months from the time you receive your acknowledgment letter.

Please note that if you are applying through a Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate from outside Canada, you will need to allow an additional three (3) to four (4) months to the total processing time. This is how long it will take for your application to be mailed from outside Canada to CPC, and the results of your application returned to the consular mission by CPC, using a diplomatic bag.

Processing times may vary. For more information see reasons why your application for a citizenship certificate may be delayed.
